HERBS AND THEIR USES
ALFALFA (Medicado sativa)
A nutrient rich herb used often by people who are in a weakened state. Alfalfa
is a nourishing tonic helpful for nursing mothers.
ALKANET (Batschia canescens)
An herb often used as a colorant. Imparts a soft ruby color.
ANGELICA (Angelica)
Bitter herb that is used to support digestive functions. Antispasmodic, for
strong menstrual cramps with scanty flow; intestinal colic and poor digestion;
stimulating expectorant for coughs. Not for use in pregnancy.
ARNICA (Arnica montana)
A first aid treatment for trauma bruises, contusions, sprains and inflammation.

ASTRAGALAS (Astralagus membranceous)
A traditional Chinese herb that strengthens the natural defense systems of the
body, helps protect the liver from damage and aids in reducing the toxicity of
pharmaceutical drug therapy.
ASHWAGANDA (Withania somnifera)
An adaptogenic tonic that promotes vitality, vigor and mental acuity.
Traditionally used to tonify the libido. Not for use during pregnancy.
BAYBERRY (Myrica cerifera)
Astringent, used to strengthen and tone mucus membranes such as in the sinuses,
respiratory system, gums, vaginal tissues. Deters bleeding gums, sore throats,

BENTONITE CLAY
A natural earth clay that has a powerful drawing action to pull toxins out of
the skin and the gastrointestinal tract.
BETH ROOT (Trillium erectum)
Astringent, useful for excess menstrual flow, menopausal flooding, and
postpartum hemorrhage. A uterine tonic that contains natural precursors of

BLESSED THISTLE (Cuicus bcncdictus)
Helps to increases lactation taken in tea or in the extract form. Many mix it

for skin eruptions and a variety of skin conditions. Its bitter quality
stimulates digestion and helps balance blood sugar.
BURDOCK SEED (Arcticum lappa)
Similar in action to Burdock root, the seed increases urination and tonifies the
kidneys. It is used by pregnant woman as a safe diuretic that help allay toxemia.
Useful for swelling in the legs, feet, and hands.

CACAO NIBS (Theobroma cacao)

abscesses. Often found in children's products for topical use.
CARADAMON (Eletarria Cardamomum)
This culinary herb helps expel gas from the gastrointestinal tract and its
antispasmodic action helps with colic and nausea.
CASCARA SAGRADA (Rhamnus purshiana)
Traditionally been used as a laxative and mild liver stimulant. Its bitter
qualities act as a digestive tonic. Not for use in pregnancy.
CATNIP (Nepeta cataria)
An antispasmodic and cooling herb for the digestive system used to used to ease
indigestion, flatulence and colic; mild astringent, specific for childhood
diarrhea. Not for use in pregnancy.
CAT'S CLAW (Uncaria tomentosa)
Strengthens the G.I. System, especially good for sufferers of Crohn's Disease,
IBS, Gastritis, and leaky gut syndrome. In its native Peru, it historically has
been used for cancers. Known to reduce side effects of chemotherapy. Also good
for skin problems and arthritis.
CAYENNE (Capsicum frutescens)
Equalizes circulation; for cold hands and feet; strengthens heart; stimulant;
carminative; styptic. Antiseptic, used as gargle for persistent cough.
CEANOTHUS (Ceanothus americanus)
Lymphatic remedy. Used for tonsillitis, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes and
spleen, fibrous cysts. Mild expectorant, hemostatic.
CELANDINE (Chelidonium majus)
Stimulates liver and gallbladder secretions and drainage. It is an antispasmodic
for the gallbladder and gastrointestinal tract. Not for use in pregnancy.
CHAMOMILE (Matricaria chamomilla)
Sedative, carminative, antispasmodic, anodyne. Children's herb, especially for
fever and restlessness. Mouthwash for gingivitis.
CHAPARRAL (Larrea mexicans)
Blood cleanser, antioxidant; antibiotic; antiviral; antiseptic; specific for
infections, sluggish liver, skin problems, arthritis, tumors. Do not use if you
have a history of liver disease.
CHASTE TREE BERRY (Vitex agnus-castus)
Stimulates and normalizes pituitary function which can help to balance hormones
such as progesterone. For PMS, menstrual cramps, menopause, post birth control
pill rebalancing. Not for use in pregnancy.
CHICKWEED (Galium aparine)
Commonly used externally to soothe itchy and inflamed skin conditions. Can be
taken internally as well.
CHRYSANTHEMUM (Chrysanthemum morifolium)
A popular gentle Chinese herb used to relieve gas, inflammation and headaches.
It is made into a summer beverage in China because of its refreshing and cooling
flavor.

A mineral rich clay, especially good for oil skin that would benefit from it's

varicose veins, spider veins, and hemorrhoids. Not for use in pregnancy.
HORSERADISH (Cochicaria armoracia)
Stimulating aromatic herb that opens the sinus passages and encourages better
circulation; for flu, fevers, sinus and respiratory congestion. Promotes
salivation, helps expel gas from the gastrointestinal tract.
HORSETAIL (Equisetum spp.)
High in silica and calcium, strengthens hair, skin and nails. Slight diuretic.
Helps correct bedwetting in children.
HYDRANGEA(Hydrangea arborescens)
Useful in cases of enlarged prostate as well as in cases of stones and gravel of
the urinary system.
HYSSOP (Gratiola officinalis)

JAMAICAN DOGWOOD (Piscidia erythrina)
Sedative; anodyne; smooth muscle antispasmodic. For insomnia, neuralgia,
menstrual cramping. Relieves coughing, reduces fevers.
JUNIPER BERRY (Juniperus spp.)
Urinary tract antiseptic, used for cystitis and inflammation of the urethra.
Should not be used in kidney inflammation or chronic kidney weakness. Not for

KAVA KAVA (Piper methysticum)
Promotes a state of happy unconcern, promotes mental focus and stress reduction.

LADY'S MANTLE (Alchemilla vulgaris)
Long used in European herbalism for menstrual issues such as cramping and

asthma, whooping cough, muscular cramping and pain. Can cause vomiting in large
doses. Not for use in pregnancy.
LOMATIUM (Lomatium dissectum)
Antiviral; immune stimulant; for colds, flu, viral sore throats, respiratory
infections and congestion.
LYCII BERRIES (Lycium barbarum)
Often prescribed in Chinese medicine for diabetes, Lycii berries also help
nourish and strength the liver and kidneys.
MACA (Lepidium meyenii)
Native to the high plateaus of Peru, Maca tonifies the entire glandular system
and enhances libido and stamina.
MA HUANG (Ephedra spp.)
Vasodilator; antispasmodic; hypertensive; circulatory stimulant; used for
asthma, bronchitis, whooping cough, hayfever; opens air passages. Not currently

MARSHMALLOW (Althaea officinalis)

MEADOWSWEET (Filipendula ulmaria)
As an anti-inflammatory, Meadowsweet is useful for minor muscle pains and
headaches. Also used to relieve acid reflux, nausea and gastritis.
MILK THISTLE (Silybum marianum)
Powerful liver detoxifier, antidote for Amanita mushroom poisoning. Increases
secretion and flow of bile. Promotes breast milk production in nursing mothers.
MISTLETOE (Phoradendron flavescens)
An excellent relaxant nervine that quiets, soothes and tones the nervous system.
Helps to reduce heart rate while strengthen the wall of peripheral capillaries.

MOTHERWORT (Leonurus cardiaca)
Eases false labor pains. Antispasmodic and cardiac tonic; reduces tension and
anxiety. The heart tonic for women experiencing menopausal symptoms such anxiety

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
Related to DMSO, MSM helps relieve pain associated with arthritis. Also helps
improve the quality of hair, skin and nails and heals the intestinal lining.
MUGWORT (Artemisia vulgaris)
A bitter herb that helps stimulate digestion. Mugwort is also used in Chinese
medicine as Moxa and was smoked by Native Americans. Because it strongly
stimulates menstrual flow, Mugwort is not for use in pregnancy.
MULLEIN (Verbascum blattaria)
An anti-inflammatory and demulcent herb beneficial for the respiratory and
urinary tract system. Specific for soothing the urinary tract, and calming a
strong painful cough.
MYRRH (Commiphora myrrha)
Antiseptic; anti-microbial; astringent. Used for mouth ulcers, sore throat,
gingivitis. gum disease, sinusitis and pharyngitis. Used externally on cuts and
abrasions. Not for use in pregnancy.
NETTLES (Urtica diocia)
A nutritive herb that is rich vitamins, minerals, and chlorophyll. Good for
anemia. Helps promote production of breast milk in nursing mothers. In
freeze-dried capsule form it works as a safe and effective anti-histamine for

PEPPERMINT (Mentha piperita)
Soothes and relaxes the stomach, helpful for nausea and gas. Useful in colds and
flu to cool a fever.
PIPSISSEWA (Chimaphila umbelata)
A diuretic and urinary tract disinfectant useful in cystitis and other
infections and congestion of the genito-urinary system.
PLANTAIN (Plantago spp.)
A soothing expectorant for coughs and bronchitis. Its soothing astringent
properties make it a good herb for inflammation of the mucous membrane of the
gastrointestinal tract. Topically, it heals wounds and inflammatory skin
conditions.
PLEURISY (Asclepias tuberosa)
Reduces inflammation and encourages expectoration in respiratory infections such
as bronchitis, pleurisy, pneumonia and flu. It is also an antispasmodic for
coughs and helps regulate the body temperature during fevers.
POKE ROOT (Phytolacca spp.)
Cleanses and moves the lymphatic system, for tonsillitis, mumps, laryngitis,
swollen glands and mastitis. Specific when there is slow recovery time of acute
conditions of the mouth, throat, and groin. Caution: Small dosages are
recommended as large doses could cause diarrhea. Not for use in pregnancy.
PRICKLY ASH (Zanthomxylum americanum)
Stimulates peripheral circulation, helpful for cold hands and feet, and for
Raynaud's disease. Has a stimulating effect on the lymphatic and digestive

A strong antiseptic and antibacterial useful for mouth and gum conditions, sore
throats and colds. Its waxy nature makes it useful for coating and isolating
areas of throat inflammation to prevent spread of infection.

Widely used as a soothing intestinal fiber.

RED CLOVER (Trifolium pratense)
A blood cleansing and nutritive herb useful in inflammatory skin conditions in

menopause and some cancers.
RED RASPBERRY (Rhubus idaeus)
A safe pregnancy herb that is rich in vitamins and minerals. It relieves nausea

STEVIA (Stevia rebaudiana)
Also known as Sweet Leaf, stevia is a naturally occurring sweetener that is 300
times sweeter than sucrose.
STONE ROOT (Collinsonia canadensis)
Strengthens the structure and function of veins, useful for varicose veins and
hemorrhoids. Helps prevent and dissolve urinary stones and gravel. Not for use

THUJA (Thuja spp.)
Thuja is native to the Pacific Northwest and is a Cedar species. An
antimicrobial herb useful in Candida and other fungal overgrowth. Not for use in

infections. Topically, the diluted essential oil can be used for infected

Traditional Ayurvedic herb used for bronchial infections. Modern research has
shown its use effective for adrenal fatigue and stress. Also known as Holy

Used as a spice in Indian cooking for thousands of years, modern research has
shown Turmeric to be a strong anti-inflammatory for heart disease, muscles,

USNEA LICHEN (Usuca .spp.)
A strong antimicrobial and antiviral useful for a broad range of infections. Not

UVA URSI (Arcostaphylos uva-ursi)
A strong urinary antiseptic, Uva Ursi is a commonly used as an anti-microbial in
cases of bladder infections and cystitis.

An astringent herb used for bleeding, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, bruising and

WOOD BETONY (Stachys betonica)
Feeds and strengthens the central nervous system. Useful for anxiety, nervous
